Recruit Training Overview Timeline

button to click to print tthe following information
From the first recruit training drill the staff and Young Marine Drill Instrcotors will be watching for uniform compliance at the time of arrival and sign in plus during the drill. If a recruit arrives at drill without the correct uniform then staff may elect to 1) not let the recruit participate in the drill, 2) allow the recruit to leave and return with the correct uniform, or 3) separate the non-conforming recruit from the other recruits during the drill. continued non-compliance to the uniform requirements, instrcotions from staff, or instrcotions from superior Young Marines at drill will be considered a voluntary request for a discharge and forfeiture of fees paid.

A recruit is allowed two excused absences during recruit training but an excused absence is not a waiver of the requirements for graduation. A recruit who misses the Drug Demand Redcotion training and cannot complete the three hours required, or misses the Physical Fitness Test and cannot have a score recorded, will not meet the requirements for graduation. Additionally, there are other key events which may be offered at only one drill, scoh as the taking of pictures for graduation and identification cards. Unexcused absences may disqualify a recruit from graduation and being offered the opportunity to participate in subsequent Recruit Trainings. A recruit can miss no more than two (25%) of the recruit training drills. This is based on national guidelines allowing up to three excused absences during a twelve drill recruit training. Absence policy and notification information is available on the Absence Notification page. A link on that page will provide a form to fill out and submit, or the following is a link directly to the absence notification/explanation form. To be considered for an excused absence the recruit must follow the Young Marines policy regarding notification.

To be eligible to be an Honor Graduate and promoted to PFC upon graduation from recruit training, a recruit must complete all assignments, must pass written exams, must pass the Physical Fitness Test, must have the correct uniform, and must not have any unexcused absences. From the group of recruits meeting this criteria a limited number of honor graduates are selected based on demonstrated behavior consistent with the Honor, courage, and commitment values of the Marine corps, and the Discipline, Leadership, and Teamwork values of the Young Marines. From the honor graduates one recruit is selected to receive the Honor Recruit award.

Following is an overview of the clothing/events timeline of recruit training drill by drill:

Drills 1 and 2: Recruits should dress warmly in layers and wear a coat if necessary for warmth. No clothing with a hood may be worn during drills. The recruit uniform is a gray sweatshirt without a hood, jeans with a belt, a cotton white crewneck t-shirt, and tennis shoes (Woodland camos and black jungle or official Young Marines' non-scuffing boots will be required at drill 4). (The day pack to be presented to recruits at graduation must be ordered and purchased no later than drill 3.)

Drill 3: Recruits should dress warmly in layers and wear a coat if necessary for warmth. No clothing with a hood may be worn during drills. The recruit uniform is a gray sweatshirt without a hood, jeans with a belt, a white crew neck t-shirt, and tennis shoes (Woodland camos and black jungle or official Young Marines' non-scuffing boots will be required at drill 4). Recruits bring recruit PT alpha uniform (Gray sweatshirt without a hood, gray sweatpants, white t-shirt, black athletic shorts, white athletic socks that rise above the ankles, and tennis shoes). Recruits by squad earn a cover (gold with Oregon Cascade Young Marines embroidered in scarlet stitching) to wear during recruit training if and only if each recruit in their squad can recite the Creed, Obligation, and YM core Values (a requirement for graduation from recruit training). (Squad competition will determine chow line order.) This is the last day to order and pay for the required day pack.

Drill 4: Recruits should wear a coat if necessary for warmth. No clothing with a hood may be worn during drills. The recruit uniform is Woodland camouflage (camos) with a belt, a white crew neck t-shirt, OCYM cover, and (black jungle or official Young Marines') non-scuffing boots. Recruits will receive their name tapes for the camos blouse and trousers (which must be sewn onto camos prior to next drill: nametapes (with ends folded under to prevent fraying) will be sewn 1) over the right rear pocket of the trousers, centered and flush over the top pocket seam, and flush to the edges of the pocket, and 2) over the right pocket of the blouse, centered and flush to the pocket seam, and flush to the edges of the pocket. The complete Young Marines uniform regulations may be viewed online.) Recruits bring recruit PT alpha uniform (Gray sweatshirt, gray sweatpants, white crew neck t-shirt, black athletic shorts, white athletic socks that rise above the ankles, and tennis shoes). This drill willl also include a private discussion between the Information-Recruiting Officer and recruits to assess whether adjustments need to be made. The co may also have a private session to ensure recruits know their well being is our highest priority.

Drill 5: Recruits should wear a coat if necessary for warmth. No clothing with a hood may be worn during drills. The recruit uniform is camos (with nametapes sewn on the camo blouse and trousers), OCYM cover, a belt, a white crew neck t-shirt, and (black jungle or official Young Marines') non-scuffing boots. Pictures willl be taken for the graduation program and the Young Marines identification cards. Recruits bring recruit PT alpha uniform (same as YM's).

Drill 6: Recruits should wear a coat if necessary for warmth. No clothing with a hood may be worn during drills. The recruit uniform is camos (with the nametapes sewn on the camo blouse and trousers), OCYM cover, a belt, the white crew neck t-shirt, and (black jungle or official Young Marines') non-scuffing boots. Recruits bring recruit PT alpha uniform (same as YM's). Recruits may bring to this drill a white crew neck t-shirt which will be stenciled with the Unit logo for use after recruit training. Recruits earn their Young Marines camo cover and web belt upon completion of the preliminary Physical Fitness Test (a requirement for graduation from recruit training).

Drill 7: Recruits should wear a coat if necessary for warmth. No clothing with a hood may be worn during drills. The recruit uniform is camos (with nametapes sewn on the camo blouse and trousers), OCYM cover, belt, a white crew neck t-shirt, and (black jungle or official Young Marines') non-scuffing boots. Recruits bring recruit PT alpha uniform (same as YM's). A final Physical Fitness Test (a requirement for graduation from recruit training) will be condcoted and scored. After the completion of the final PFT the recruits will be issued the camo YM cover, a web belt, and blousing bands. Recruits will be instrcoted how to wear the issued items, and recruit collars will be unbuttoned. Recruits may submit 1-2 gray sweatshirts if properly marked with name of the recruit, to be stenciled with the OCYM logo on the back.

Drill 8: Graduation. The recruit uniform is camos (with nametapes sewn on the camo blouse and trousers), camo YM cover, web belt, white crew neck t-shirt, and (black jungle or official Young Marines') non-scuffing boots. The PT uniform is not needed because there will not be any PT by YM's or recruits. Graduation setup and practice starts after morning formation and continues, except for chow, until ceremonies start at 1400.

Graduation Criteria. There are graduation requirements for the scocessful completion of the Young Marines recruit training.

a) Be signed off on all required Performance Requirements for the rank of Private.
b) Perform and have recorded the Young Marine Physical Fitness Test.
c) Meet the minimum required attendance during Young Marine recruit training. (Recruits must attend the graduation ceremony in order to graduate, unless the Unit commander grants an excused absence which may impose specific additional requirements.)

At graduation from recruit training each new Young Marine will receive: A day pack with the YM's name and the Unit logo embroidered on it, red national t-shirt, white t-shirt (if provided by recruit) with Unit logo stenciled on back, Young Marines Basic Guidebook, dog tags, ribbons earned during recruit training, and the camo uniform patches and Unit designation arc.

The Young Marines olive drab breast pocket patch, the Oregon Cascade unit designation arc, and the Young Marines shoulder patch must be sewn on the camo uniform before the next drill attended as a Young Marine. [The Young Marines olive drab breast pocket patch over the left pocket of the blouse, centered and flush to the pocket seam, and flush to the edges of the pocket. The Young Marines shoulder patch is worn on the wearer’s left sleeve with the Oregon Cascade unit designation arc centered above the patch, on the shoulder seam.]

A recruit not completing recruit training and graduating will receive none of the above but will receive the day pack if one was purchased. (Depending upon the circumstances and when the recruit quit or dropped out, the day pack may not be embroidered with the youth's name or the OCYM logo.)
